Requirements for the transfer of ashes
What are the requirements for transferring a loved one's ashes? This will depend on whether the transfer is national or international, as well as other factors. However, the legislation outlines how this transfer must be carried out and what documents are required.

Literal death certificates
For the national and international transfer of ashes, it is necessary to provide the national and multilingual literal death certificate issued by the Civil Registry.

Cremation certificate
The cremation certificate is another necessary document for any type of management with the ashes and/or transfer of any kind, and it is issued by the funeral home that carried out the cremation.

Identification documentation
The legislation on the transport of human ashes by plane states that they must be properly identified. Therefore, in addition to the corresponding documentation, it is advisable to check if there are any special requirements for the transfer of ashes by plane with the specific airline.

Special urns
For the transfer of ashes by plane, urns made of metal or containing metal decorations are not allowed.
Additionally, due to their weak resistance, urns made of biodegradable materials are not recommended, as they may get damaged during transport.

Transport permit
In general, no health permit is required for the transfer of ashes, but this will depend on the destination country, as well as the policies of each airline.
For example, Air Europa allows the transfer of ashes, as long as the urn fits under the seat or in the overhead compartment. On the other hand, Iberia allows it as hand luggage, provided that an appropriate funeral urn is used, properly covered and concealed, and with breakage-proof packaging.

Specific regulations according to the destination
In some countries, a permit for the transfer of ashes may be required. It is the destination country that determines this and other requirements.

Consulate or embassy
When a loved one passes away outside of Spain, it is recommended to contact the embassy or consulate to expedite the procedures with the funeral home. However, the cost of transferring ashes must be covered by the family, unless they have a life insurance policy or similar.
At Stelae, we offer an ashes transfer service with the best value for money, taking care of all the necessary procedures, regardless of the origin and destination.
